Looking for a dream job in a dream town? Look no further. Durango was rated one of the nations top paddling/ski towns by Paddler Magazine. Learn the topics needed toward guide certification or brush up on your skills as a private boater. This is going to be an intense class. You will work hard but learn a lot.

You must be 18 or older, physically fit, friendly and drug free to work for 4 Corners Whitewater. Space is limited, apply now.

COURSE DATES

SESSION 1 - GUIDE SCHOOL FOR PRIVATE BOATERS: This course is perfect for those new to rafting who want to learn all the skills necessary to travel safely on private river trips. We will emphasize oar boat techniques, safety and rigging/planning for overnight trips. This course takes place over three weekends so you don't have to miss work!

SESSION 2 - GUIDE SCHOOL FOR POTENTIAL GUIDES: This course is for those interested in becoming commercial raft guides in the US. We provide all training necessary for Colorado State guide certification.

SAMPLE ITINERARY

  • Day 1: Introductions, equipment, classroom session, river run.
  • Day 2: Classroom session, river run, throwbags.
  • Day 3: Safety and rescue, flip practice.
  • Day 4: Advanced paddling and rowing.
  • Day 5 and 6: Overnight trip on the Upper Animas river.
  • Day 7: Written and practical exam.

  • Clothing and personal gear selection, use and maintenance.
  • River features and hazards.
  • Scouting, portaging, lining and running rapids.
  • Paddle boat technique.
  • Oar raft technique.
  • Leadership and guiding in a private or commercial environment.
  • River rescue and safety procedures.
  • Flip and swimmer recovery.
  • Minimizing outdoor recreation resource impacts.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING?

  • Sturdy footwear that you don't mind getting wet.

  • Your own paddling gear if you have it (wetsuit/drysuit, PFD, helmet, etc).
  • Pen and notebook.
  • Money for food and lodging (free camping available).
  • Sleeping bag and pad.

ATTENTION POTENTIAL GUIDES

The state of Colorado requires training in 8 topics and a total 50 hours of on river training before becoming certified. This training covers all 8 topics and includes approximately 50 hours of on river training. You will then need a check ride with clients. You must also obtain at least First Aid to guide on the Lower Animas and Wilderness First Aid (WFA) plus experience to guide on the Upper Animas.
